The Heart Center at Manning Family Children's

The Heart Center at Manning Family Children's provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of patients with congenital cardiovascular disorders, from before they are born, through childhood and into their adult years. Our accomplished and dedicated team of specialists includes physicians, surgeons, nurses and support staff who are trained to care for the unique needs of children with heart disease as well as their families. The goal of The Heart Center is to enhance the quality of life for every child.

Leading the way in Pediatric Heart Care

The Manning Family Childrens’ Heart Center is committed to advancing pediatric heart care through the use of innovative and expert evidence-based practices, with a dedicated team of experts providing compassionate and personalized care for the most complex heart conditions.

Our Heart Center provides life-saving mechanical circulatory support options, including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) and the Impella cardiac device, for children experiencing end-stage heart failure or hemodynamic compromise. We also care for patients with a family history of congenital heart disease, offering early interventions and advanced treatment planning to optimize long-term outcomes.

Manning Family Children’s is proud to be the first and only hospital in Louisiana to offer the newly FDA-approved Occlutech ASD Occluder, a minimally invasive device designed to close atrial septal defects (ASDs) in the heart. The innovative design of the Occlutech device allows for more flexible and precise placement, offering a safer and more effective solution for children born with this common congenital heart defect.

Manning Family Children’s Heart Center is proud to be the first program in Louisiana to offer full percutaneous Stage 1 palliation for high-risk single-ventricle patients—a groundbreaking advancement in pediatric heart care. This innovative approach provides a less invasive alternative to traditional open-heart surgery, offering new hope for infants who may not tolerate surgery well due to medical challenges. By utilizing catheter-based techniques, our expert cardiologists can perform the entire Stage 1 procedure with reduced surgical trauma, shortening recovery time, and lowering the risk of complications.

Patients also benefit from our expertise in cutting-edge treatments. For example, Manning Family Children’s was the first hospital in Louisiana to utilize virtual reality segmentation technology, which combines various forms of imaging, such as ultrasounds and CT scans, to create 3D models that can be viewed in virtual reality. With this technology, our cardiothoracic surgeons can better plan and execute complex procedures, which can help reduce surgical time and speed recovery. Following the success of its first surgical case utilizing this technology in a newborn with congenital heart defects, Manning Family Children’s plans to expand use of the virtual reality segmentation software for patients with more complex congenital heart defects. As leaders in the region, our team continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible in congenital heart care.
