Comprehensive Care for Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors

Comprehensive Care for Bone and Soft Tissue Tumors

At Manning Family Children’s, our Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Program provides expert care for children, adolescents, and young adults facing these complex conditions. Whether a tumor is malignant (cancerous) or benign (non-cancerous), our experienced, fellowship-trained orthopedic tumor specialists are dedicated to supporting families through diagnosis, treatment, and recovery.

Why Choose Us for Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Care

Bone and soft tissue tumors in children vary widely in type and severity. We understand that every case is unique, and our pediatric-trained specialists are here to provide expert care for each child’s specific needs. Not all tumors are cancerous, and some require immediate intervention, while others may be safely monitored over time. Our comprehensive approach ensures both an accurate diagnosis and a personalized treatment plan that considers the unique nature of growing bones and tissues.

Families can feel confident in our team’s specialized care, highlighted by:

  • Multidisciplinary Approach and Oncology Partnership: Our team provides coordinated care through close integration with our oncology department and collaboration across pediatric oncology, orthopedic oncology, and other specialties.
  • Advanced, Minimally Invasive Techniques: We offer highly specialized procedures that treat tumors with minimal disruption to surrounding healthy tissue.
  • Limb-Preserving Surgery: Our expertise in preserving and reconstructing limbs supports improved function and quality of life.
  • Ongoing Monitoring and Support: We create personalized follow-up plans to ensure each child’s long-term health and development.

Evaluation and Treatment

At the Bone and Soft Tissue Tumor Program, each patient receives a comprehensive evaluation by our multidisciplinary team. Initial assessments may include imaging and, if needed, a biopsy to accurately determine whether the tumor is cancerous or non-cancerous. Based on these findings, we develop a tailored treatment plan designed to address each patient’s unique needs.

  • Benign Tumors: For non-cancerous tumors, treatment may involve monitoring or minimally invasive procedures. In many cases, benign tumors do not require extensive intervention but are closely observed to prevent complications.
  • Malignant Tumors: If the tumor is cancerous, treatment may involve a combination of surgery, chemotherapy, and other therapies tailored to the type of tumor. If necessary, our team is experienced in limb-preserving surgical techniques and advanced reconstruction options.

Patient Success Story: Meet Shenae

Read the inspiring story of Shenae Harris, who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma – a rare and aggressive bone cancer – when she was just 10 years old. With the dedicated support of her care team at Manning Family Children’s, she successfully underwent limb preservation surgery and extensive chemotherapy, overcoming a series of challenges to not only walk again but live cancer-free for over 20 years. Now a dedicated lab assistant at the same hospital where she received life-saving care, Shenae encourages young patients to stay hopeful through their own journeys. Read Shenae’s full story here.
